Aviation English Program

The program is made up of three courses and two language proficiency tests:

  • General English – Aviation
  • Radiotelephony for Pilots
  • Radiotelephony for Air Traffic Controllers
  • RMIT English Language Test for Aviation(RELTA)

General English - Aviation

The General English – Aviation course is designed for Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers who need to improve their general English language skills before progressing into the Radiotelephony English course. Many pilots and controllers use routine phraseology every day but their general English language skills are underdeveloped. This course therefore focuses on general skills in English within both aviation and general contexts which are familiar to participants from a broad range of backgrounds.

Radiotelephony English for Pilots / Air Traffic Controllers

These courses are designed for participants who have demonstrated sufficient proficiency in general English to understand and use plain English in the more complex and unfamiliar contexts associated with radiotelephony communication. The participants are required to have experience or demonstrated understanding of the operations and procedures associated to their workplace (eg flying commercial jet aircraft).

Pilots and/or Air Traffic Controllers who complete the Radiotelephony English courses or who are able to demonstrate extensive commercial flight/air traffic management experience and high English proficiency are able to sit the RMIT English Language Test for Aviation (RELTA).

RMIT English Language Test for Aviation (RELTA)

There are two forms of RELTA, one catering for pilots (RELTA – Pilots) and the other for air traffic controllers (RELTA – Air Traffic Controllers). Each has been designed to assess pilots or air traffic controllers against the six-band ICAO Language Proficiency Scale. Candidates are required to demonstrate an ability to communicate in routine contexts, where standard phraseology is required, and more unpredictable and non-routine situations where both phraseology and competence in plain English is needed in accordance with the ICAO Language Proficiency Standard.

For personnel whose levels of English are low, there is a General English program to meet their needs.

General English Program

Participants that do not meet the entry requirements for the program can undertake General English at Pre-Intermediate Level.

  • General English Pre-Intermediate – Module A (Including Assessment)
  • General English Pre-Intermediate – Module B (Including Assessment)

The General English courses take a communicative approach to language learning. It focuses on purposeful and meaningful communication for the students in a variety of contexts. The courses specifically focus on development of functional English in the four areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Each of these modules is 125 hours in duration, face to face delivery. This course also includes a rich multimedia interface that is integrated into each couse unit of study.
